Katharina Grosse Turns Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen into a Bold Painted Landscape.
From June 5 to September 14, 2025, Deichtorhallen Hamburg hosts Wunderbild, a monumental solo exhibition by German artist Katharina Grosse. Known for her powerful, site-specific paintings, Grosse uses bold colors and large surfaces to explore how art interacts with space and movement.
At the heart of the show is a massive walk-in installation made of two towering fabric panels, each stretching up to 60 meters long. These painted surfaces hang from the ceiling and can be viewed from both sides, inviting visitors to move around and through the artwork. Originally designed for the National Gallery in Prague, Wunderbild has been reimagined for Hamburg’s 3,000-square-meter Hall of Contemporary Art.
A new sound installation, developed in collaboration with musician Stefan Schneider, adds another layer to the immersive environment. This mix of painting, sound, and architecture creates an emotional and physical experience that pulls viewers deep into Grosse’s colorful world.
In addition to the main piece, the exhibition features canvas works, never-before-seen sketches, and a special earth-based sculpture that transforms the space into a painted landscape. Visitors can also watch a new documentary by Claudia Müller, offering a behind-the-scenes look at Grosse’s creative process.
