Joan Jonas: Drawings & Nature

Curated by Adam Pendleton
May 17 – July 3, 2025 | Pace Gallery, Tokyo

Pace Gallery Tokyo showcases a remarkable collection of drawings by renowned American artist Joan Jonas. This thoughtfully curated exhibition, led by artist Adam Pendleton, brings together nearly 80 works that trace Jonas’s long-standing exploration of nature, animals, and movement through drawing.

Jonas began her journey with Japan in 1970, and this exhibition celebrates that lasting connection. Many featured pieces reflect the influence of her experiences in Japan over the years, offering a personal and poetic look into her evolving artistic vision.

Known globally for her groundbreaking contributions to video and performance art, Jonas blends multiple forms—including drawing, sculpture, and choreography—into immersive visual narratives. She first gained attention in New York’s avant-garde circles during the 1960s and 70s, collaborating with major creative figures such as John Cage, Yvonne Rainer, and Trisha Brown.

This Tokyo exhibition also serves as a preview of Jonas’s participation in the upcoming show Japanese Contemporary Art and the World 1989–2010, opening in September at the National Art Center Tokyo.

Explore how Joan Jonas continues to challenge boundaries and redefine contemporary art through the intimate and expressive medium of drawing.
