Yoshitomo Nara at Hayward Gallery

June 10 – August 31, 2025 — London

This summer, the Hayward Gallery showcases Yoshitomo Nara, one of Japan’s most iconic contemporary artists. The exhibition spans over 40 years of Nara’s creative journey, featuring paintings, drawings, sculptures, and portraits.

Known for his bold images of wide-eyed children and animals, Nara blends innocence with rebellion. His work explores themes of home, solitude, peace, resistance, and freedom. Music has always been central to his process, from American folk to punk and blues.

Nara’s time in Germany shaped his distinctive style. His figures first appeared during his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he absorbed European art traditions while forging his own expressive language.

The exhibition also highlights Nara’s response to global and personal events. Pieces like From the Bomb Shelter (2017) and Midnight Tears (2023) capture the emotional aftermath of natural disasters and collective trauma.

Curated by Yung Ma and the Hayward Gallery team, this landmark exhibition offers a rare chance to experience Nara’s world up close.
