Troubling Wonder: Cambridge University’s Online Symposium on Fairy-Tale Studies

“Tales are marks that leave traces of the human struggle for immortality. Tales are human marks invested with desire. They are formed like musical notes of compositions except that the letters constitute words, and are chosen individually to enunciate the speaker/writer’s position in the world, including his or her dreams, needs, wishes, and experiences.” (Zipes, 1999, When Dreams Came True: Classical Fairy Tales and Their Tradition, p. 2)

Jack Zipes explains beautifully the nature of fairy tales and why they have never stopped amazing us throughout the centuries. All of us have grown up with fairy tales, which are an inseparable part of our lives. That is why, no matter how much we know about them, there is still more to learn and discover, because fairy tales are like mirrors showing us our true nature. So let’s prepare ourselves for the international symposium on fairy-tale studies hosted by the University of Cambridge.

Cambridge Research Network for Fairy-Tale Studies is holding an online symposium on fairytale studies. From October 1st to October 4th, fairy-tale scholars from around the world will get together to discuss the enchanting nature of fairy tales.
