From August 14 to 16, Toronto’s creative community came together for Art Week Toronto, a three-day celebration of art, culture, and creative expression. Hosted at Artscape Youngplace, the event brought together artists working across different media, creating an energetic space for artistic exchange, discovery, and connection.
For me, participating was more than exhibiting my work. As an Iranian artist based in Toronto, my practice is deeply connected to memory, storytelling, displacement, and the traces of belonging. Bringing my work into this diverse artistic environment allowed my personal stories to become part of a larger conversation.
One of the most compelling aspects of the event was its emphasis on connection. Visitors were able to encounter artworks while engaging directly with artists and learning about the stories, ideas, and processes behind their practices. This created a welcoming atmosphere in which art felt accessible and conversational rather than distant or institutional.
The event was particularly meaningful as a reflection of Toronto itself: diverse, multicultural, and constantly evolving. The range of artistic voices demonstrated how personal experiences, cultural histories, memories, and contemporary social realities can coexist within the city’s art community.
What stayed with me most was the sense of connection—the different materials, cultures, and perspectives coming together in one place. Art Week Toronto reminded me that while art can begin with a deeply personal experience, it can ultimately create something collective.
