Empress of Night – Marcel Dzama LA

Marcel Dzama unveils his latest exhibition, Empress of Night, at David Zwirner Los Angeles, located at 606 N Western Avenue. This captivating show runs from June 28 to August 8, 2025, featuring new drawings, paintings, and the immersive film “To live on the Moon (For Lorca).” Visitors can explore Dzama’s magical worlds filled with anthropomorphic animals, dancing figures, and surreal nightscapes, where references to Goya and Lorca add historical and poetic depth.

The centerpiece film, inspired by Federico García Lorca, blends theatrical storytelling with surreal dream imagery, all displayed in a cozy gallery setting with midnight blue drapes and bean bag chairs. Large-scale drawings like “The sleep of reason produces monsters” and “Blue water blues” invite viewers into lush, fantastical environments, while powerful works like “I never came from your rib you came from my vagina” celebrate femininity and challenge contemporary issues.

This exhibition marks Dzama’s significant return to Los Angeles after over two decades. It coincides with his major survey, “Dancing with the Moon,” at Istanbul’s Pera Museum. Dzama’s distinctive visual language, rooted in folk tales, art history, and the subconscious, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
