Sabita Dangol: Creativity in Quiet Moments

In the vibrant heart of Kathmandu, where ancient traditions weave seamlessly into the pulse of modern life, Sabita Dangol creates art that speaks in whispers and roars. A visual poet, she paints with the colors of her soul, threading the delicate patterns of her Newari heritage with the boundless imagination of a contemporary dreamer. Her canvases, adorned with combs, lovers, and nature’s tender embrace, are not mere images but conversations—between the artist and her inner world, between the viewer and the eternal. In this interview, Sabita invites us into her universe, where creativity is a sacred act of untangling life’s complexities, offering harmony and hope in a world that yearns for both. Her work, like a pause in time, beckons us to linger, to reflect, and to find beauty in the quiet moments that define us. Now, let us begin the conversation with this remarkable artist.

How would you describe yourself and your journey as an artist to someone who has never encountered your work?
Namaste, I am Sabita Dangol, a visual artist based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Basically, my art practices are based on painting, performance art, and installation. My art journey started from childhood as a hobby and craftsmanship. I used to design and decorate my house with floral crafts, greeting cards, glass art, etc. After high school, I joined Fine Arts College to pursue my passion for art. Having formal education, I started to develop my inner style and creativity.

What does creativity mean to you beyond making art—how does it shape your view of the world?
In my opinion, creativity means a personal expression from the core of the heart and inner intuition. Creativity varies from person to person and is not comparable. In my way of working, I don’t expect my style to be common or resemble others, because my thought process starts from my imagination, skill, and personal experience.

What kinds of inner landscapes or emotional states often inspire your artistic impulses?
My early artworks are much inspired by and related to my daily life activities and my own state of mind. It was quite a struggling phase when I used to pursue my studies along with daily household chores and responsibilities. I used to handle all with balance, and it could be expressed through my earlier artworks. My life started moving in an artistic line after I married an artist husband, and my way of working became a parallel journey with him. Later on, the Couple Series paintings were based on the outcome of my livelihood. So, I think what we bear in life could affect our creativity.

In your opinion, what role can art play in preserving or reshaping collective memory?
Art depicts and represents the time, situation, and surrounding conditions. I think art denotes the nation’s cultural heritage and traditions. So, whatever we see around us reflects the proper time, history, and context of that time frame.

How do you imagine the relationship between the viewer and your art—should it comfort, challenge, or simply be?
Regarding the relationship between my artwork and art lovers, I find a space of comfort and appeal due to delightful and positive thoughts, which are based on my paintings, and I think viewers could also find them relevant. Sometimes the viewers share their thoughts beyond my ideas and deeper than what I think. Many people first ask why I have been painting the comb as a major metaphor, and after my explanation, they become convinced of my concept.

When working on a piece, is there a moment that tells you it’s complete—or does the idea of “finished” remain open-ended for you?
Yes, the way I work in my paintings starts from a basic idea and later develops into a larger piece. My paintings are a quiet conversation with myself. So sometimes there is a sense that I have already finished, and sometimes it’s open-ended for me.

In a world filled with noise and speed, what place do you believe silence and slowness have in art?
For me, art is capturing the moment in a single frame, which can pause a viewer by helping them escape their rapid daily life. Art can relax and heal, allowing one to enjoy the moment.

Can art act as a bridge between personal experience and collective understanding? How?
I agree that art can connect personal experience with collective understanding, because whenever an artist creates art that carries a positive message, it can leave a good impression on collective consciousness. Throughout my paintings, I use the comb as a metaphor that untangles tangled hair—a strong message that it’s a tool to clear superstitions, negativity, and injustice. So, the observer could also connect with my paintings, and it could change their thoughts.

In your eyes, what makes a work of art linger in someone’s memory long after they’ve left it behind?
Art has a strong power to keep an impression. If the artwork can create a dialogue between the viewer and itself, it can be long-lasting. Art should not be monotonous but should lighten the consciousness of the audience and leave an impression. So, if any artwork has the quality of keeping the audience engaged and resonates with them, it can create a powerful bond between them.

Is there a message, feeling, or thought you would like to leave us with today?
Through me and my artwork, I want to spread the message of positivity and harmony, and make an appeal to create a peaceful planet rather than a world full of chaos and imbalance. This world can only move forward with love, compassion, and honesty.
